Narrowing My Topic List

After reading page 26 I have narrowed my topic list down to 3 possibilities
  • Alternative medicine in cancer treatment-That alternative medicine needs to be looked at more seriously while searching for treatments and cures for cancer.
  • All day kindergarten-Is it really necessary or is it being used to fund more unneeded school funding.
  • The 4-H program-although it is a very good program there are some issues that that are hindering the overall standing of this long time program.

Fulkerson Article

In the article by Richard Fulkerson, he really puts the emphasis on picking a topic that matters to you, the writer. Mainly because if you have a a strong tie to your subject matter the more time and effort you will generate towards your project. You are going to be putting a lot of time into your writing and you certainly want to stay focused and not get bored with your paper.

He also discussed keeping your research to more current articles and using scholarly research areas. You don't want to use resources that may be too obscure in their thinking. Use a resource that is respectable, not all magazines or Internet sources are true in their finds. He also brought up specialized indexes which I plan to look more into.

There were two other areas that seemed to stay with me after reading this paper and they were included in the five areas where your paper can go wrong section. One of those areas was the pro/con summary, now I can honestly see myself making this mistake because I sometimes find it very hard to make a decision or choose a side in some cases. Also the data dump would be an trap I would fall into. Its where you gather so much information and patch it all together with out really using it effectively.

Topic Ideas

I do not have a clue on a topic for my paper. I am trying to think of things that are effecting me directly and i want to be able to be able to find one that I can be excited about or be able to present with a passion. At this point I really can not find one that gives me that feeling. Her are a few topics anyway:

  • All day kindergarten is a good thing or not. To whom does it benefit the child, the state, the government, the NEA, or the parent?
  • Modern medicine or alternative in the fight of cancer
  • The party system for government is it really helping the country or is it tearing it apart
  • 4-H its positive and its negatives and what we can do to keep it and good organization
  • Simple life styles better for longer life?

If you have any suggestions Mr. Weller I am all ears!!!!!!

Global Warming

Ok I read the article and I am probably going to be considered to be a skeptic here. I am taking into account there is a weather change going on and i am not disputing that fact, but is it something we have done or is is a cycle that the earth is going through For instance how long have we actually been recording temperatures? How long have we been able to use satillite images to see the ice caps and the changes?

I guess I am swayed by what my grandfather told me, who by the way would have been 95 this February, he remembers it being rather warm in the 30s and then it returned to being cold and people were not too concerned then in the 50's we went through a warm streak again and at that time they said it was nucelar fall out from the war and all the testing that the goverment had been doing, then we leveled out. Now we seem to be discussing it again. Now I have been watching the weather for our area and paying alot of attention to the record highs and record lows for our area and I did notice even though we had a mild winter that alot of times the records were not broken for the highs.

I guess I am saying somethings we can control but there are some we cant like the evloving of the world. Remember there was an ice age we were not there and we did not have control of that and the scientist say that all the land masses use to be connected we had no control of them dividing so I guess what I am saying there are some things you just cannot control and one being the weather.

Week 2 Chapter One

I really enjoyed reading this chapter I found Rachel Carson so interesting I went on to read more about her on the Internet and hope to read Silent Spring in its entirety. The fact that she was able to take her expertise of Marine Biology and instead of bombarding people with a lot in your face scientific fact she used her book as a story to draw the reader in and then in small increments told those ideas by translating the scientific facts into words that most people could understand.

Another fact in the reading I found amazing was there were others who had done writings on the very same problem and they did not get recognized or in this case listened to, proves to me that it is the way you present your facts that will get the readers attention and get you points across.

In this case she took a very personal view of a problem defined what was the cause and presented solution.

Week 2 Assignment

After reading the Stuart Greene article I liked how he compared it as if you are entering an ongoing conversation and you are taking what has already been discussed and using that information that was there to form a informed response to what has already been said.

I also found the strategy for writing interesting the idea of of using memorable terms to help key in on details of your argument I never gave any though to it but it is used everyday in advertising all the way through government speeches. Words or Phrases that seem to stay with you and possess a certain meaning.

I plan to keep this article very close for the remainder of the semester so I can key in and use some of these keys when writing my paper.

I myself am in my second year of college I am either going for a Nursing or Radiology degree I have not quite decided. I also work at the IPFW Warsaw campus office on the work study program and do some catering and baking on the side to help with the household expenses. I do carry in dinners for the entertainment that comes to the Wagon Wheel Theater which I have a lot of fun doing and have the opportunity to meet some very nice people.

We have a small 12 acre farm which allows us to raise some livestock for the boy’s 4-H projects and have many pets. At this time we have a pony, 5 head of cattle, 2 sheep, 2 dogs, 9 cats, 1 hamster and 2 fish and this list is ever changing because a week ago you could have added 2 goats and 2 more sheep to the list. Check back next week for any updates.

Being in the country also lets me do some of the hobbies I enjoy such as gardening, canning, wildlife watching and photography. Some of the other things I enjoy to do are crossword puzzles, reading, listening to music watching movies and entertaining friends and family.

Some of my favorite authors are Patricia Cornwell and Stephen King. I also enjoy music immensely and have a long list of favorites, to list a few Styx, Journey, Triumph, REO, Nickleback, Damn Yankees, Phil Vassar, Keith Urban are on the top of the list as with many others. TV shows I enjoy are House, all the CSI, Ghost Whisperer, Supernatural, ER and Bones, Do you see any similarities?
